Cinderella Series – Cinderella, Dressed in Yellow

Cinderella dressed in yellow  / went downstairs to kiss a fellow / made a mistake and kissed a snake / how many doctors did it take…

So went a jump-rope rhyming song from my childhood–ending, of course, with the number of how many jumps you could do before before you made a mistake and the rope hit your ankles.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Cinderella.  On the one hand, I love a good fairy tale ending and I’m fan of the underdog characters who stick it to The Man (or The Stepmother, in this case).  On the other hand, I hate how passively she’s been portrayed, especially in the Disney cartoon, and I’m not a fan of her being swept off her feet by some prince who falls for her purely based on her beauty and her inability to keep track of her footwear.

That Being Said:

My first novel, which I am currently in the final process of editing, is a modern retelling of Cinderella called City of Refuge.

Yes, you can cut the irony with a knife. Especially since Cinderella is one of the most retold fairy tales.  Everyone thinks they have a fresh take on the idea.  There are enough written, theatrical, and movie versions to fill an entire shoe store.

What makes mine so different?

Well, you’re about to find out.  Each Saturday is going to be a “City of Refuge” Saturday, featuring character ideas, excerpts from, or concepts relating to the story.  And being that yours truly is writing the story, the character is a little more bleached-blond and tattooed than previous versions.  But first: a series of posts dedicated to the fairy tale that started it all!
